The work

Four businesses I would rebuild.

There is no client gallery here yet, and I would rather say so than pad this page with someone else's logos. So I picked four kinds of business whose websites are holding them back, and built each one — these are the real pages, running, not pictures of them.

  1. concepts.onwardcreations.co.uk/hospitality-pub

    HospitalityConcept - self-initiatedBroadsheet

    The Bramley Arms

A pub in the hills above Leeds, doing food seven days, with a beer garden looking out over the fells and no table booking system.

  2. concepts.onwardcreations.co.uk/trades-joiner

    TradesConcept - self-initiatedStatement

    Kirkgate Joinery

A two-person joinery outfit. Fitted wardrobes, staircases and kitchens, mostly on referral.

  3. concepts.onwardcreations.co.uk/leisure-golf-club

    Leisure and membershipConcept - self-initiatedAir

    Meanwood Vale Golf Club

A members' club with a waiting list, visitor green fees and a function room to let.

  4. concepts.onwardcreations.co.uk/professional-accountant

    Professional servicesConcept - self-initiatedConsole

    Halliday & Rowe

A four-person practice doing self-assessment, payroll and limited company accounts.

Concepts are self-initiated and unpaid. Nobody has been billed for these, no client has endorsed them, and none of the four businesses exists.

What I do

Three things, done properly.

Most people come to me for the first one. The other two exist because a website on its own often is not the whole job.

  • Websites

    The main thing I do.

A site that loads in under a second, works properly on a five-year-old phone, and says what you actually do in the first line. Built by hand, not assembled from a theme.

    • Design and build
    • Copy support
    • Hosting and domain sorted
  • Apps

When a website is not the answer.

Booking, ordering, membership, internal tools: the things that need to do a job rather than describe one. Scoped properly before anyone commits to a number.

    • Scoped per project
    • Built to be handed over
    • No lock-in
  • Social and content

    Keeping it alive after launch.

A site nobody updates goes stale within a year. Photography, posts and page updates, on a monthly plan you can cancel whenever you like.

How it works

Four steps, in order.

Each one depends on the one before it, which is why they are numbered. You always know which one we are on.

  1. We talk for twenty minutes

Phone, or in person if you are near Leeds. What the business does, who you want walking through the door, and what the current site is doing wrong. No pitch deck.

  2. You get a fixed price in writing

One number, what it covers, what it does not, and the date it will be live. Before anything starts and before you have paid anything. If the scope changes later, the price changes in writing too.

  3. I design and build it

You see it as it comes together, not in one big reveal at the end. Rounds of changes are included: two, three or agreed per phase, depending on the package.

  4. It goes live and I hand you the keys

Domain, code, content, analytics: all in your name, all yours. If you walk away tomorrow you take the lot with you. Then a fortnight of free snag fixes while you live with it.

What it costs

Published prices, held.

The number you see is the number on the invoice. No VAT, no day rates, no discovery phase you pay for before anything exists.

Why me

One person is the feature, not the risk.

The objection is fair and it gets asked on almost every call, so here are the four answers before you have to.

  • You deal with me

The person who designs it is the person who builds it and the person who picks up the phone. No account manager relaying your feedback to someone you have never met, and nothing quietly handed to a junior once the contract is signed.

  • No overheads, so the price is the price

There is no office, no sales team and no management layer to fund. That is the entire reason I can publish fixed prices and hold them, and why they sit where they do.

  • I came from engineering, not marketing

My background is design engineering: CAD, product development, things that have to physically work. I have spent my career making things that get tested rather than presented. A website that looks good in a mockup and falls apart on a real phone would not have passed there either.

  • You are not locked in

You own the domain, the code and the content from day one. The care plan is monthly and you can stop it whenever you like. The site stays yours and stays up. Nothing here depends on you being unable to leave.

Questions

The things people ask on the call.

Answered here so you do not have to spend the first ten minutes of a conversation asking them.

What does a website actually cost?

Between £1,200 and £4,500 for most small businesses, and the figure is agreed before anything starts. £1,200 gets a single well-built page, £2,400 gets a six-page site with the SEO and analytics set up properly, and bespoke work starts at £4,500. No VAT on top, because I am under the threshold.

How long does it take?

One to two weeks for a single page, three to four for a full site. The date goes in the quote. The thing that actually delays projects is waiting on content from you: photos, opening hours, the list of what you do. So I ask for that up front rather than a fortnight in.

Do I own the site, or am I renting it from you?

You own it. The domain is registered in your name, the code is yours, the content is yours, and the analytics account is yours. If we stop working together you keep all of it and I hand over every login. There is no version of this where leaving costs you the website.

I already have a website. Is it worth redoing?

Sometimes not, and I will tell you if so. If it loads quickly, works on a phone and brings in enquiries, spend your money elsewhere. If it takes six seconds to load, was built in 2016, or you are embarrassed to send people to it, that is costing you more than a rebuild would.

Do you write the copy and take the photos?

Copy support is included from the Standard package up. I will rewrite what you have and fill the gaps. Photography is not included in any package. Good photos of your actual premises, staff and work are worth more than anything I can do with the layout, so I will tell you honestly when it is worth hiring someone.

What happens after it launches?

Two weeks of free snag fixes, then it is up to you. The care plan is £55 a month and covers hosting, the domain, SSL, backups, security updates, uptime monitoring, small content changes and a monthly performance report. It is optional, it is monthly, and cancelling it does not take the site down.

The next step

Let's find out if I'm the right fit.

Twenty minutes on the phone. You tell me what isn't working, I tell you what I'd do and what it costs. If it's not me you need, I'll say so.

Or call 07700 900123. I reply within one working day.
